A Piece of the Pie

"Simple Simon" snapshot.
I want a piece of the illustration industry pie so badly I can't stand it.  So I keep cooking up kooky illustrations, concocting portfolio pieces, & baking up my style brand.

here is a peek at a piece I just completed for the 4th Annual SCBWI-Carolinas Art Contest.  I am stoked because Lucy Cummins, Art Director, Simon & Schuster, is this year's judge. She critiqued our portfolios at the 2011 regional conference and I just fell in love with her infectious enthusiasm for children's books and her uncanny sense of humor. I've grown tremendously since that review and I can't wait to gain further feedback from her professional eyes.

  1. Boy that pieman looks harried! Great expression, & I love the element of exaggeration. I think he should charge more for his pies, though, or I'd be likely to buy them ALL!!! :) Really nice piece!

    1. LOL! Thanks Mit. That is actually "Simple Simon" from them Mother Goose nursery rhyme. That was our challenge. I cropped the pie man and the rest of the piece out since it is supposed to be a blind contest for the judge. I agree. The pie man should charge much more than a penny. :)

    1. Thanks, Michaele. I've gotten such mixed reviews on this one that it has made me doubt my character choices a bit. But, Simon makes me laugh and I went through a ton of variations before arriving on this one. I guess he was dying to come out.

  5. This is a really cool piece, Jen! I love your spirit on this blog, very much in the same spirit as mine and other artist/creators. Good luck on this! And keep up the daily drawing - that was also one of my goals for 2013. Cheers! :)
